You can encounter an older study through a book without having read that study yourself. Keep the document you actually consulted separate from the work it discusses. This guide follows a fictional reading record through two stages: the original remains unavailable, then it is obtained and read.

The APA rule used here

APA Style’s official guidance on secondary sources, accessed on 1 November 2026, recommends limited use of indirect citations and reading the original where possible. For this APA situation, the reference list records the secondary source actually used. The text identifies the original and the route through the secondary source. Include the original publication year when known; do not invent it when unknown. The page points to section 8.6 of the seventh edition. Follow your assignment if it requires a different style.

A fictional source chain with a real access gap

Every author, year and work in the following case is invented teaching material. These are not publications or reference entries to copy into an assignment. You have read a teaching document by Morgan dated 2022. It attributes a description of revised library lending instructions to Patel, 1996. You cannot obtain Patel’s work yet. You have not checked its context or wording.

Misleading record: “Patel 1996 read; original confirms that the instructions improved borrowing.” This falsely claims direct reading and adds an effect. Morgan’s description of changed instructions does not establish that effect.

Route one: only the secondary source has been read

A transparent note says: “Morgan 2022 read directly. Patel 1996 known only through Morgan. Original access unresolved. Instruction changes reported; effect not verified.” Record the location in the document you have. If a locator is missing, mark it unresolved rather than making one up.

An exercise sentence could read: “The revision of lending instructions is attributed to Patel (1996, as cited in Morgan, 2022).” The parenthetical structure follows the official APA pattern; our invented names are editorial examples. This sentence is not a quotation from Patel and does not imply direct access.

Under that APA rule, the list includes the secondary source Morgan that you actually read. Build its complete entry from verified details for the real document type. The exercise deliberately supplies no imaginary publisher, page range or DOI. Do not list the inaccessible original as though you consulted it yourself.

Route two: the original becomes available later

A search hit or downloaded file is only the start. Verify that it is the intended work and edition, then read the relevant passage in context. In our fictional continuation, Patel describes the changed instructions but does not investigate their effect. You can now support the limited description directly; the effect remains unverified.

Update the record: “Original obtained, identity checked and relevant passage read; instruction change confirmed, effect not studied.” Revise your prose using that reading and format a direct citation under the required style. Retain an acknowledgement of Morgan if you still use Morgan’s own interpretation. Finding a file alone is no reason to remove the indirect-source marker.

Audit the change before submission

  1. Can a reader tell which document you actually read for each statement?
  2. Have you avoided presenting a secondary author’s summary as the original’s exact words?
  3. Are inaccessible works and missing details still visibly unresolved?
  4. After direct reading, do the paragraph, reference list and research notes agree about the access route?

If the original remains unavailable, use the course rules to decide whether an indirect citation is sufficient or the claim should be omitted. Do not substitute a similarly titled source without checking identity. Keep private reading notes and restricted documents secure.

The two routes document a change in evidence access. They do not guarantee that an interpretation is correct. Even after obtaining an original, compare your claim with what the passage supports and preserve any remaining uncertainty.
