A correct calculation can still produce a misleading sentence if the unit or baseline disappears. This worksheet uses small invented counts for arithmetic practice only. They are not customer metrics, a real study or evidence about any product.
The fictional record
Comparable practice periods contain six recorded reservations and then nine. The draft says: “Usage increased by 50 percentage points, proving that satisfaction improved”. The counts concern reservations, not percentages, unique users or satisfaction. The calculation and the interpretation need separate checks.
A completed calculation card
Starting count: 6 reservations. Ending count: 9 reservations. Absolute change: 9 minus 6 equals 3 reservations. Relative change: 3 divided by 6 equals 0.5, or 50%. “Percentage points” is the wrong unit for this count comparison. Reporting only “50%” also hides the small starting count. Record both counts and define the periods before using the calculation.
A corrected sentence
“In the fictional practice record, recorded reservations increased from six to nine across the stated comparable periods: three additional reservations, or a 50% relative increase from the starting count.” This is a description of invented records, not a statistically established trend. Add that the record does not measure satisfaction or show how many distinct people booked.
What still needs checking in real work
Confirm period length, definitions, recording method, cancellations and duplicate entries. Equal period length alone does not establish that every other condition is comparable. Do not present this exercise’s comparability assumption as a fact about your own data. Attribute the source actually consulted and label any calculation you performed yourself.
When the baseline is zero
A relative percentage change using a zero starting value cannot be calculated by the same division. Do not invent a percentage or call it 100% by default. Report the available counts and the limitation instead. A count increase by itself also does not identify its cause.
Final editing log
Replaced percentage points with reservations and relative percent; restored the baseline; removed satisfaction and causal implications. Check the table caption and conclusion so the old interpretation is not reintroduced. This calculation card is not a complete statistical analysis or a guarantee that small samples justify a general claim.
