A method paragraph can describe an intention as though it were completed work. Before submitting, match each activity verb to a record of what actually happened. This teaching worksheet concerns honest reporting, not a required research design or an institution’s declaration form.

A wholly fictional project

A practice plan proposes interviewing students and comparing two guidance documents. The writer has read one document, has not obtained the other, and has not interviewed anyone. The draft nevertheless says: “We interviewed students and compared both documents; the findings confirmed the preferred approach.” No participants, interviews or findings exist in this exercise.

The completed activity record

Activity: interviews. Evidence of completion: none. Status: proposed only. Action: remove the claim that interviews occurred. Activity: document comparison. Evidence: one document read, second unavailable. Status: incomplete. Action: describe the available document only if that fits the assignment, or complete an authorized comparison before claiming it. Activity: confirmation of a preferred approach. Evidence: no completed comparison or outcome record. Action: withdraw the claimed finding.

A replacement paragraph

“This practice project proposed interviews and a comparison of two documents. At the present stage, one document has been read; the second has not been obtained and no interviews have been conducted. The planned comparison and any findings remain incomplete.” This accurately describes the fictional stage; it is not an acceptable substitute for results if the actual task requires a completed study. In that case, address the unfinished work through the course’s permitted process.

Before changing a verb

Changing “conducted” to “planned” corrects the record but does not complete the activity. Similarly, a prepared interview guide is not a set of interview responses. An application for required permission is not permission received. Do not initiate participant contact, data collection or sharing solely because a writing worksheet mentions them; follow the applicable authorized process.

Final decisions

Interviews relabelled planned, comparison marked incomplete, unsupported finding removed. Check the abstract, table captions and conclusion for verbs that still imply completion. Keep only records you are permitted to retain, and cite documents actually consulted in the required style without inventing bibliographic details. A clear activity log documents status; it does not certify compliance or guarantee assessment outcomes.
