Permission to discuss readings does not automatically permit joint drafting. Before collaborating, distinguish research, discussion, analysis, comments on drafts and production of the submitted text. Check the rules for the actual assignment.

A complete fictional case

A fictional seminar allows students to discuss readings but requires an individually written comparison. Maya and Leo discuss two explanations. Maya records a question, returns to the materials and builds her argument independently. She does not take Leo’s paragraph and rewrite it.

If Leo sends a completed conclusion for Maya to adapt, the situation changes. Acknowledging help does not make prohibited collaboration acceptable. Maya leaves that text out of her submission and asks about the specific situation if necessary. She does not delete records to conceal the exchange.

A four-field contribution record

Record the activity, participants, shared output and final use. A fictional completed entry is: reading discussion / Maya and Leo / question list / arguments drafted separately. Another is: clarity comment / peer / comparison is difficult to follow / author revises the explanation herself. Do not label an externally rewritten argument as spelling correction.

Questions before sharing

“May we discuss the readings? Are comments on drafts allowed? Which steps must be individual, and what help must be declared?” Wait for clarification when the uncertainty concerns the activity you intend to undertake. Permission from another class does not settle this task.

Compare the record with the final version

Check whether you can explain every argument and whether another person’s contribution is presented as yours. Declare help as required by the applicable rules, without publishing unnecessary personal details. Keep an uncertain activity pending. The proposed record is an editorial aid, not a universal institutional declaration form.

The cases and record are original teaching suggestions, not university regulations. Check the requirements applicable to your task.
