An appendix can hold supporting material, but its presence does not complete an argument. Follow the actual assignment or publication instructions about appendices, length and assessment. This exercise offers a way to check where your reasoning lives; it does not create a universal formatting rule.

A fictional draft with a missing link

A practice essay compares two invented booking procedures. Its main paragraph says: “Procedure A is more suitable for the question examined here; see Appendix B.” Appendix B contains a student-made comparison of booking conditions, but the main text never states the criterion or explains how the comparison supports the conclusion. No real service or research result is described.

Map the claim to a criterion

In the fictional task, the question is which procedure allows a person to identify an available appointment before sending a request. The invented description of A shows availability before the request. The invented description of B says a request is sent first and availability is confirmed later. These are conditions set for the exercise, not evidence that A is faster, more popular or universally better.

Decide what must be explained in the paragraph

Completed map entry: claim, A fits the specified information-order criterion; evidence, the two described sequences; reasoning, A presents availability before a request, while B confirms it afterwards; limitation, neither description measures speed or user experience. The reader needs this connection to assess the claim. Keeping only “see Appendix B” leaves the reasoning unstated.

A revised main paragraph

“For the exercise’s criterion of seeing an available appointment before making a request, procedure A fits the described requirement: its availability display precedes the request. In B, confirmation follows the request. This comparison concerns the order of information, not waiting time or overall service quality. Appendix B records the supporting step-by-step comparison.” In real work, attribute the descriptions to sources you actually consulted using the required style. This invented paragraph is not a real empirical finding.

Decide what can remain as supporting detail

The appendix can retain the detailed step list and the comparison record if the task permits them. Give them a clear label and ensure the text points to the correct item. Do not hide a crucial qualification, missing source or unresolved contradiction in an appendix while presenting an unqualified main claim. If material is confidential or belongs to another person, check whether sharing it is permitted; an appendix is part of the submitted document.

The completed placement record

Main text: criterion, relevant evidence, inference and limits. Appendix: permitted detailed sequence map, with provenance identified. Removed claim: A is faster, because no timing evidence exists. Final check: the main argument remains understandable when the reader first encounters it, and the appendix supports the same limited claim. This record is a revision aid, not proof that an institution will assess or accept an appendix. If the instructions prohibit appendices, revise within those instructions rather than moving required content outside the permitted document.
